Why: If good things come in pairs, Saturday night’s For Our Future World Concert online concert is a winner. Two local choirs (Wavelengths Community Choir and the Gettin’ Higher Choir), two special guests (Lea Morris and Valdy) and two fundraising beneficiaries (Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Victoria and Area, and Habitat Acquisition Trust) are in the mix for this engaging night of choir performances and singer-songwriter fare, with net proceeds going to the charities.

What: Fluid Jurisdictions: Colonial Law and Arabs in Southeast Asia

Why: The University of Victoria’s Centre for Asia-91Ô­´´ Initiatives welcomes Nurfadzilah Yahaya for a Zoom talk today centred on the author’s new book, Fluid Jurisdictions: Colonial Law and Arabs in Southeast Asia. Yahaya, an assistant history professor at the National University of Singapore, will discuss Arab culture in the context of British and Dutch colonialism with UVic associate law professor Pooja Parmar and PhD candidate Mary Anne Vallianatos.

Why: Oliver Swain needs no introduction, having kept the gypsy-jazz flame alive in Victoria for the past several years. He’s now multiple months into his Hermann’s Hot Club series, a showcase booked into Hermann’s Jazz Club on the last Thursday of every month, courtesy of the Victoria Django Society. Tonight’s livestream featuring Swain (bass/banjo/voice), Richard Moody (violin/viola/voice) and Paul Dowd (guitar) will give those watching at home plenty of reasons to dance tonight.
