Critic's picks: Basia Bulat, Frankenstein, JJ Wilde

Our Arts reporter's top picks for the week ahead

BASIA BULAT

Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St.

When: Saturday, Oct. 15, 9 p.m. (doors at 8)

Tickets: $32.96 from

Montreal’s Basia Bulat revisited songs from her back catalogue on her acclaimed 2022 recording, The Garden, complete with new string quartet arrangements by Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy, among others. The orchestral effort earned her a Polaris Music Prize shortlist nomination this year, which subsequently raised expectations for her long-awaited cross-country tour (which, like many others, was initially postponed due to COVID). Look for the Toronto-bred, Montreal-based Bulat and her four-piece band to rework the songs once again on this run, with a stop set for Saturday at the Capital Ballroom that will be equal parts majestic and moving.

FRANKENSTEIN

Where: Craigdarroch Castle, 1050 Joan Cres.

When: Oct. 14-29

Tickets: $32.79 from or 250-592-5323

Victoria actor Jason Stevens will stage 11 performances of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein between now and Halloween, during which time he’ll portray 10 characters in his abridged version of Mary Shelley’s macabre 1818 novel. The castle will be alive on Fridays and Saturdays with the centrifugal force of this enduring one-man showcase, thanks to star power of the classically-trained Stevens, who also handles Charles Dickens during Christmastime. Don’t miss either seasonal treat. Stevens is a gem. Note: Tickets to Frankenstein do not include a tour of the Castle. Additionally, performances are held on the fourth floor, to which there is no elevator access.

JJ WILDE

Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St.

When: Tuesday, Oct. 18, 9 p.m.(doors at 8)

Tickets: $37.08 from

Kitchener rocker JJ Wilde is making the most of her post-COVID tour commitments, with positive reviews of her opening appearances on recent concerts by Pearl Jam, Scorpions, The Glorious Sons, and KISS. Her first-ever headlining tour of Canada arrives at the Capital Ballroom on Tuesday, nearly one week after the trek began, which means the Juno Award winner (and opening act, Billy Raffoul) will be primed and ready. With a string of chart-topping rock radio hits (including The Rush) and a powerful live show, Wilde is one of the top rock performers in the country at the moment.
