Why: The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s upcoming season explores Japanese culture and landscapes through a trio of connected exhibitions. Fiona Tan: Ascent runs through June 16, while Quiet Nature: The Woodblock Prints of Walter J. Phillips and Landscapes of Edo: Ukiyo-e Prints from the AGGV Collection wind down in May. The open house provides guests with the opportunity to browse the gallery while surrounded by art representative of several traditions, from Buddhist ukiyo-e and Japanese woodcut to still photographs of some of Japan’s iconic landmarks.

What: South Island Vinyl Record Show
Where: Fernwood Community Centre, 1240 Gladstone Ave.
When: Saturday March 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission: $2 (kids free)
Why: The biannual stop for record hounds is back for its spring session, with thousands of records for sale. The top collectors in the city will be on hand as sellers, so vinyl hounds and crate diggers can expect plenty in the way of alluring possibilities. Coffee and food will be available, but the majority of Saturday spending at the South Island Vinyl Record Show is reserved for the real comfort food — wax platters. Note: Bring cash. There will not be an ATM on site, so don’t arrive with empty pockets.

What: Tom Cochrane with Red Rider
Where: Charlie White Theatre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney
When: Tuesday March 12 and Wednesday March 13, 7:30 p.m.

Why: Can-rock favourite Tom Cochrane and his bandmates in Red Rider return to 91Ô­´´ Island for a pair of anticipated performances at the Mary Winspear Centre’s Charlie White Theatre, which should provide no end of intimacy. Cochrane is a master showman, and with his considerable catalogue of hits, his performances on Tuesday and Wednesday will be crowd-pleasing affairs.
