ART: Adorned

Where: Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1040 Moss St.

When: June 11-Nov. 20

Admission: Free (Friday and Saturday); regular gallery admission rates from June 12 onward

Why: The thin line between art and fashion is blown wide open in Adorned, a new group exhibit at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Adorned officially opens its five-month run at the Moss Street gallery on Saturday, but a free gala event is set for Friday at 6 p.m., featuring music by DJ Ezo and a pop-up fashion show from Victoria Eco Fashion Week. That’s the perfect way to mark an event of this magnitude. The gallery’s chief curator, Jaimie Isaac, who is a member of Manitoba’s Sagkeeng First Nation, created Adorned with cultural exploration in mind, so it’s fitting that interdisciplinary artists from as far away as Toronto and Yukon are participating.

MUSIC: Queer as Funk: Hey Sailor! Spring Fling

Where: Bay Street Armoury, 713 Bay St.

When: Friday, June 10, 7 p.m.

Tickets: $30 ($15 for youth 25 and under) from

Why: 91原创 party band Queer as Funk will perform inside the hangar-like Bay Street Armoury — one of the city’s best-kept secrets when it comes to showstopping live venues — at this appealing fundraiser for the Maritime Museum of British Columbia. The night is honouring the museum’s groundbreaking exhibit, Queer at Sea: Tales From the 2SLGBTQ+ community, which runs through November, while celebrating the twilight of Spring with a high-energy party. Note: Use the access on Field Street (off Douglas Street) to enter the venue.

MUSIC

What: The Fabulous B-Sides

Where: Hermann’s Upstairs, 753 View St. (second floor)

When: Thursday, 8:30 p.m. (doors at 7)

Admission: By donation

Why: Not only do attendees get to spend the night at Hermann’s Upstairs with The Fabulous B-Sides, a new dance-friendly project from several experienced local performers, proceeds from this by-donation event will benefit animals displaced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The band, which features former members of local cover bands Groove Kitchen, That ’70s Band, The Sutcliffes and the Soul Shakers, is sending donations to PETA, which has built shelters in Hungary for more than 1,300 animals and delivered over 400 tonnes of supplies. Good music for a good cause? Win-win.
