Why: Anita Rochon is in the director鈥檚 chair for this Amy Herzog political family drama, an off-Broadway hit that drew a Pulitzer Prize nomination in 2013. The title refers to the distance Leo Joseph-Connell (played by Nathan Howe) cycles before meeting up with his grandmother, Vera Joseph (Brenda Robins), who infuses her old-world sensibilities into their relationship. What ensues is a cross-generational dramedy that more than earns its estimable reputation.

Why: Ladysmith鈥檚 Ryan McMahon heads into a very busy month of May with a few 91原创 Island dates, beginning with a CD release party at the Duke Saloon on Friday. His run of dates will continue with shows in Parksville (May 3), Cowichan Bay (May 4) and Nanaimo (May 10-11), all in support of his sixth album, In Line For A Smile. He will resurrect Lion Bear Fox, his project with Cory Woodward and Christopher Arruda, later this year, so his upcoming shows offer the chance to see the rootsy singer-songwriter up close.
