The 36th edition of the Islands Folk Festival will not go ahead as planned, but organizers of the popular Duncan festival “guarantee” the event will return next year.

The three-day folk festival was set to take place July 24-26 at Providence Farm. It was cancelled following comments made this week by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, who ruled out festivals and large gatherings this summer.

“We were hopeful that the festival would still take place during the early stages of the quarantine, but it soon became apparent that there would be serious implications at play as time went on,” the Cowichan Folk Guild, which produces the event, said in a statement.

“While we are disappointed, we stand behind the government’s decision that was made using scientific data and expert consultations. Many of our festival attendees are in vulnerable groups, and it is imperative we keep all of our patrons, artists and volunteers safe.”

Tickets and camping passes for the 2020 festival will be honoured at the 2021 festival.

“We guarantee we will be back next year with smiles and gratitude to everyone who takes part in our festival,” organizers said.
