Editorial: Quietly doing good work

At a time when many organizations make a big noise about their good work, the Kiwanis Village Society quietly provides housing for seniors, and is ready to provide more.

At a time when many organizations make a big noise about their good work, the Kiwanis Village Society quietly provides housing for seniors, and is ready to provide more.

Kiwanis Village, and similar facilities, provide an important service in an era of low vacancy rates and high rents. Residents can have a maximum monthly income of $1,800 and the maximum for couples is $3,000. Rents range from $450 a month to $785.

In the past, the society funded everything through rents and fundraising; buildings went up without debt. That鈥檚 an impressive record. Today, with buildings aging and the need for more units growing, the society will likely have borrow for an important redevelopment.

The plan is to replace one-level buildings with a $14-million, four-storey independent-living building that will have between 74 and 90 units.

In keeping with the community atmosphere, residents have been part of the plans, including the goal to make the outdoor spaces more enjoyable and walkable.

Quietly and responsibly, Kiwanis continues decades of service to the city鈥檚 seniors.
