A Victoria driver will be at the starting line at the Sports Car Club of America U.S. National Championships, being held this year at the Indianapolis Motors Speedway.
Racer Bill Okell鈥檚 chance at the championships was guaranteed when he recently won the GT-Lite Western Conference championship by the smallest of margins 鈥 a single point 鈥 in his Austin Healey Sprite.
鈥淭he race was a big accomplishment, taking the win while also setting a track record,鈥 said Okell, a local businessman when not behind the wheel.
The SCCA hailed his accomplishment in a statement, largely because it was a comeback win, gained on the last race of the championship.
Okell was one of nearly 400 drivers who competed in the Western Conference鈥檚 12-round season that took place at six venues, from southern California to Seattle.
He will now compete in the 2017 SCCA National Championship Runoffs, which run Sept.聽25 through Oct. 1 on a road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana.
