The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid as the most fuel-efficient model in the hotly contested midsize-passenger-car category. Rated at a combined U.S.
47 mpg (47 city/47 highway, or 5.0 L/100 km), the new Fusion tops the current midsize mileage champion, Toyota's Camry Hybrid, by eight mpg on the highway, and by four mpg, city.
The conventionally powered Fusion, however, did not ascend to king-of-the-hill status among its peers, coming up one mpg short of the new leader, Nissan's redesigned Altima, which was rated at an impressive combined U.S. 38 mpg. The midsize market is setting new standards for fuel efficiency virtually across the board for 2013, with all-new offerings from other brands, including Chevrolet, Ford and Honda.
