Supporters of Victoria Hospice are more used to giving than getting. But at the last fundraiser, a group of benefactors of palliative care in the community got more than their money's worth when the organization's campaign chairman brought out his collection of British classic road and vintage race cars.
Guests to his Beach Drive home last week had a rare oppor-tunity to see a 1960 Lola Mark 1, a 1963 Lotus 23B, a 1959 Elva Courier, a 1966 Brabham BT 21 Formula 2 car, a 1969 Lotus Seven and a 1967 Lotus Cortina.
The sun shone on a rare 56 AC Ace, a 64 Lotus Elan and some vintage motorcycles: a 1932 BSA 500, a 1960 Matchless 650 and a 1959 AJS 500 single.
"We wanted to do something different," said Kathleen Burton, director of development at the Victoria Hospice. "With so many different fundraisers out there, we are looking to do more and more unique events."
The last fundraiser was a scotch-tasting event. The next one is tentatively slated to be a winetasting event.
Their out-of-the-box events are making a difference. At this event, the Hospice raised more than $122,000, with perhaps a bit more yet to come. Seeing all those vintage cars: Priceless.
