Anne Spicer didn't coin the phrase "He will give you the shirt off his back," but she was as generous as the expression suggests.
Her family fondly recounts a story of Spicer winning a few thousand dollars in a lottery. She promptly set about giving it away to people in need. Her largesse only stopped when the bank called to inform her she had given away all of her windfall - and more - as she was now overdrawn on her personal account.
