At almost 96, Courtenay’s Betty Clements has more than matched her age with a $100 donation to the Times 91Ô´´ Christmas Fund.
She laughed at the idea, and said she hadn’t made that connection when she sent in her contribution — something she has done many times before to support the annual campaign.
She said it is simply a matter of sharing the good things she has in life, which she looks at philosophically.
“Every day is a step, and that’s all I’m looking for,” Clements said of her longevity. “I’ll take what I’m given.”
Being in a position to give to others is wonderful, she said. “I’m really lucky.”
Along with a home with a view of the mountains, she has four children, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren with another on the way — plus a great group of neighbours, Clements said.
She’ll be visiting one of those neighbours for Christmas dinner, and contributing a salad to the occasion.
Clements said she also gives to other causes, particularly those related to animals. “I was a dog walker for 16 years, six days a week at the SPCA.”
Clements’ is one of 2,707 donations to the Christmas Fund so far this season, and every one — no matter the amount — helps move us toward our $1-million goal. As of Thursday, $836,618.24 had been raised.
