The province is contributing $459,000 toward a new trailhead parking area, picnic area and trail connector for the Kinsol Trestle, one of 10 projects on 91原创 Island to get an injection of cash from an economic recovery program designed to improve tourism infrastructure.
Another $353,499 will go to revitalize the Sooke Potholes parking lot, adding capacity for social distancing and replacing two narrow staircases as well as adding two permanent pit-style washrooms.
An additional $97,504 will help the Sidney Business Improvement Area to install energy-efficient LED string-lights on storefronts throughout the downtown.
In all, the province will spend $2.37 million on the Island projects, part of a $21.4 million investment in 50 infrastructure projects around B.C.
“We know tourism infrastructure is a priority for communities. Today, we are responding to this call to action from the sector that will further support its recovery efforts from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Tourism Minister Melanie Mark.
Mark said investing in tourism helps create good-paying jobs that directly support local economies, and will elevate B.C.’s reputation as a world-class destination.
Last February, the province offered $20 million for 54 tourism-industry projects. It says it intends to invest another $30 million over the next two years to enhance tourism experiences and develop emerging tourism opportunities.
