The Victoria Multifaith Society sent versions of the letter below to both the Sunni Mosque and the Ismaili Jamatkhana on Friday 15 March 2019
Dear Imam Ismail
We were enormously saddened in hearing the horrific news this morning of the shooting at the mosque in New Zealand.
We鈥檇 like to express our love and solidarity with the Muslim community here in Victoria. Our brothers and sisters who adhere to the beautiful faith of Islam have again been the victims of a senseless attack based on a profound ignorance of its true nature and beliefs, including peace and good will for all people.
The distortion of truth by extremists of all stripes is truly regrettable, and injures us all. It鈥檚 been just two years since the attack on a mosque in our own country shocked all of us. The importance of not just tolerance but real solidarity has again been brought home to us.
If there鈥檚 a way of showing this support in a concrete way, we would be happy to do so. We鈥檙e hoping that these words are at least a beginning.
We wish you and the Muslim community to know that the great majority of Victorians, regardless of faith, and often because of their faiths, stand with you in grief and sadness today.
Sincerely,
Sheila Flood, Chair
Victoria Multifaith Society
