Their two friends are dead, but a pair of young women injured in a fatal highway crash north of Lions Bay on the weekend are now in stable condition, according to Squamish RCMP.
An American woman and a 91原创 woman died when their northbound Jeep Cherokee lost control on a corner and crossed the centre line, colliding head on with a Chevy pickup on the Sea to Sky Highway Saturday around 7:35 a.m.
The University of British Columbia鈥檚 student newspaper, The Ubyssey, is reporting that the two women killed were second-year students from California and Ontario.
The women were 19 to 20 years old and their families don鈥檛 want their names released, according to the case鈥檚 lead investigator, Const. Bryan Bare.
Meanwhile, Bare said his team is still trying to determine if the girls鈥 Jeep hit a patch of black ice near Loggers Creek, which is one of the few stretches of the highway with only one lane in each direction.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 know at this time if there was ice on the roadway,鈥 Bare said. 鈥淚t might have played a factor at that time in the morning that stretch of highway doesn鈥檛 see a lot of sunlight.鈥
The Chevy driver escaped with minor injuries and will not be facing any charges, Bare added.
鈥淥bviously he was quite distressed,鈥 Bare said.
The crash shut down Highway 99 for most of Saturday.
"The hearts and prayers of the RCMP go out to the families of these four young women," RCMP Insp. Tim Shields said on Saturday.
