Surrey sawmill destroyed by early-morning fire

VANCOUVER — A sawmill that was being rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire three years ago burned down early Saturday morning in Surrey.

Surrey deputy fire chief Karen Fry said firefighters were called out to a three-alarm blaze at the MacKenzie sawmill on 130th Street shortly after 1 a.m.

She said eight fire trucks responded and firefighters were trying to put out some hot spots.

One of the buildings is destroyed while the other structure sustained fire damage. said Fry.

There was no one in the building that was under renovation from the last fire in 2011, she said. There were a few security guards on site but no one was injured.

Fry said fire officials have not yet been able to get into the collapsed building to investigate. The cause of the blaze is unknown.
