NEW WESTMINSTER — New Westminster police are searching for a man who fled on foot following a two-car collision that injured an officer Sunday night.

Around 9 p.m., a New Westminster officer was patrolling with a marked police car and travelling northbound on 12th Street when a vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign.

Travelling northeast on Fifth Avenue, the vehicle entered 12th Street, causing the police car to hit it on the passenger side, spokesman Sgt. Chad Johnston said.

The passenger was unharmed and stayed on the scene. The driver fled on foot.

Police were unable to locate the suspect. After investigating, police found that the car was stolen.

“The officer’s fine and just had some minor abrasions and injuries,” Johnston said.

He was assessed at the Royal Columbian Hospital Sunday night and released shortly after.

New Westminster police continue to investigate but aren’t able to provide a description of the driver, who remains at large.

“The only person who would have that description is the officer involved in the collision, and since he was involved in the collision, he didn’t get much information,” Johnston said.

The passenger has yet to provide a description of the driver.

Police are recommending a charge of possession of stolen property against the passenger.
