A 20-year veteran of community journalism in B.C. and Alberta is the new editor of the Kamloops Daily News.

Tracy Gilchrist, the paper's City editor since 2011, was named to the position Tuesday, effective immediately.

Prior to her arrival in Kamloops she spent 16 years as editor of the Trail Daily Times. Her 20-year career in journalism since graduating from Mount Royal College in Calgary has taken her through newsrooms at the Calgary Sun, Nelson Daily News, the Crowsnest Pass Promoter and the Penticton Herald.

"She has also done yeoman's service as interim leader of our newsroom here in Kamloops since Robert Koopmans's departure in mid-July," said Daily News publisher Tim Shoults.

"Tracy's experience and dedication to the best traditions of community newspapers will serve her well at the head of the largest, most experienced and most talented news team in B.C.'s Interior for years to come."

Gilchrist encourages readers to drop her a line and share any ideas they鈥檇 like to see pursued.

鈥淲e have an incredibly creative group of journalists working here and I鈥檓 pleased we can now renew our focus on what we do best, informing the community,鈥 she said.
