See the real art of photography

Art Council's latest show caught on film

If you've ever scoffed at the idea of photography as a real art form, the Nanaimo Arts Council has a show that will change your mind.

Four talented photographers will be featured in 'Art of the Photograph' - a month long feature show at the Nanaimo Arts Council Gallery in Rutherford Mall. The show will run for the month of June and will showcase very different styles of photography.

Bill Lyons is a veteran theatre and stage production photographer and has work published in various magazines including Supernatural BC. He will have a photo on the cover of a Teledon Calendar this year where he is a regular contributor. Lyons will be showcasing his detailed architectural work.

Keith Newington has dabbled in photography since his school days and does not limit himself to a particular style or genre. What he does look for is pattern, form and function, whether it is in nature, industry or everyday life.

"British Columbia is so inspirational, it seems there is a picture around every corner, with sun and shade accentuating mood and contrast," he says.

Superb technical skills combined with an unerring eye for tight composition makes Garvin Mole's work a real favourite with photography collectors. Mole will be exhibiting some of his award winning photographs in the show.

Mary Peppard approaches photography as just another medium in her artist's toolbox where photographs can stand by themselves or enjoy a dance with multiple mediums. Look for figurative work as well as her new Mapping Paradise series this month.

The Nanaimo Arts Council Gallery's new location, which is close to Sears in Rutherford Mall, is a smaller space but some might argue that it now has an intimacy that suits viewing of local artwork, especially photography.

An opening reception will be held on June 8 at 7 p.m. The reception is open to the public, so feel free to stop by and check out the show.
