If you're looking for a little adventure one evening, hop in your car and drive to the Chemainus Theatre Festival and check out A Perfect Wife.
The play, a composite of four well-known works, was born out of a conversation between Jeremy Tow, the artistic director and Norma Bowen, artistic assistant.
Bowen was reading The Engine of Fate by Trevanian, and told Tow it would make a funny play.
"It wasn't long enough to be a full play, so I tucked it away in my back pocket," says Tow.
A few years later, Tow and Bowen decided to turn the book into a play.
This is the first of Trevanian's stories to be adapted for the stage.
They combined the story with three other famous plays to create A Perfect Wife, the story of four generations of women following their hearts from Russia to France, England and rural Saskatchewan.
"I used my English degree a lot this year," says Tow, who has studied opera, English literature, and acting.
The play combines The Engine of Fate with Anton Chekhov's The Bear and The Proposal and George Bernard Shaw's Village Wooing.
"I thought we could tie the four plays together," says Tow.
"They are different in style, but thematically the same . . . great funny love stories. I wanted to leave the author's ideas intact but blend the stories together."
"It's funny, there's a lot of physical humour and really great dialogue, but there's something thoughtful about it," Tow says.
A Perfect Wife runs until March 24. Call 1-800-565-7738.
