TheatreOne is beginning their seventh Fringe Flick Series with Fire.
The film is the first in Deepa Mehta's element inspired trilogy and explores the evolution of two sister in-law's relationship in current day New Dehli.
A beautiful and intelligent young woman embarks on an arranged, loveless marriage to a faithless husband, Jatin. The extended family, owners of a video store, live together according to custom. Family tensions escalate. Radha, Sita's sister-in-law, is unable to conceive; her disappointed husband Ashok (Sita's husband's brother) has taken a vow of celibacy, acquired a swami and is often gone. Eventually Sita and Radha develop a physical relationship which is far more emotionally sustaining than they have found with their husbands.
The film was banned in India after its initial release in 1996 due to its perceived controversial story topic. TheatreOne screened Water during their 2006/06 Fringe Flick Season with such overwhelming success that "we felt that although the film is 10 years old, that our audience would want to see another of Ms. Mehta's productions", said Rosanna Tomkinson, marketing manager for TheatreOne.
Fire is rated R and screens at Galaxy Cinema's at Rutherford Mall on Sunday at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m., and on Monday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 each.
Subscriptions to the independent film series are still available. For more info, go to www.theatreone.org/fringeFlicks.php or call TheatreOne at 754-7587.
