The Sandstone Studio's 17th annual summer exhibition opens on Saturday, and showcases the art of Marci Katz, Bill Friesen and Joe Rosenblatt, collectively known as the Eastside Group.
The Eastside Group evolved from the shared vision of its three members. Working independently, nurtured by the power and beauty of 91原创 Island's east coast, they had long pursued solitary paths, focusing on the complex imagery of interior landscapes.
This summer they bring their Mythic Archipelago to the Sandstone Studio on Gabriola.
The Sandstone Studio is the house at Page's Resort and Marina. The artists will attend the opening party 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to join the celebration and to return often throughout the summer.
Mythic Archipelago is a multi-media, multi-dimensional collaborative show depicting elusive inscapes of the imagination.
Friesen's wooden masks offer disturbing images which explore personal identity, memory, dreams, and the manipulations of contemporary cultural mythology. His approach to steel sculpture results in expressive forms assembled from 'fragments of reality', with a delicate energy and weightlessness seldom achieved in that material.
Katz's metaphoric, super-realistic charcoal/mixed media drawings capture intense, poignant moments of personal history and emotional memory. She explores the family fantasies and fairy tale mythology we absorb and 'wear' as we live our adult lives.
Rosenblatt, one of Canada's major poets, sees visual art as another way of making poetry. His vivid, whimsical drawings and paintings of backyard animals depict a dense, mythic 'voluptuous garden' whose charming residents display very human qualities as they gleefully indulge in their lustful, predatory pursuits.
The show runs daily until September at Page's Resort & Marina 3350 Coast Road, Gabriola Island. Call 250-247-8931 for more information.
