Catch original artwork on the waterfront

Third annual Artsfest takes place Aug. 19, 20

Arts is about originality and Artsfest 2006 features original works by Island artists right on the waterfront at Pioneer Plaza in Nanaimo on Aug. 19 and 20.

The festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features more than 40 artists.

The show features all original works including wood sculpture, contemporary and traditional oils, acrylics, watercolour, drawing, mixed media, batik painting, linocuts, etching and clay sculpture, all of which reflect a particular vision of the life, nature and culture of the 91原创 West Coast.

The artists will be on hand as well as musicians from the Nanaimo Songwriter's Circle.

"It's nice to hang out with the other artists," said participating artist Sheryl Sawchuk. "It's not often we get a chance to do that."

"People will come up that I've never met in my life and say 'I have one of your paintings, I've wanted to meet you.' It really makes you feel good," said artist Marilyn Ridsale.

"To think they thought enough of it to actually come and say that to you. Most artists work alone so you really don't know how you're doing -- is it good is it bad? We don't know. And then you get out there and you get some nice comments and some creative comments, so it's great to hear."

"For me it lends legitimacy to my work being around such great artists," said Tom Hutton, taking part in the festival for the third time.

Local artist Fred Peters, who's joining in the festival for the first time this year said he's looking forward to spending time with other artists and the public.

"You spend a lot of time by yourself so an opportunity like this is great," he said. "It's nice to get feedback even just a reaction as people walk by."

Artsfest is once again holding a raffle. Entrants will have a chance to win an original stone water fountain by John Charnetski-Fire Art Studios, valued at over $700, a $75 gift certificate from Glow World Cuisine, and a $50 gift certificate towards art rental from the Nanaimo Art Gallery.

On Aug. 19 at 7:30 p.m., the downtown gallery at 150 Commercial Street will host the premier chamber music performance by the Tan Trio.

Tickets are available in advance ($15) at the gallery or at the door ($18).
