Ken Brotherston - Highlands council candidate 2022

Ken Brotherston

Are you associated with or running as part of a slate? If so, which one?

NO

Do you live in the municipality where you are running, and if so, for how long? If not, what is your connection to that community?

I was brought home from the hospital to the Highlands in 1956. I have raised my children and operated our family business in this community. I served on Highlands council previously from 2002-2008 and served on the Juan De Fuca Water Commission/Board

What is your occupation, and for how long?

I have been in forestry, road construction, home building and land development for 51 years.

Tell us about your previous elected and/or community experience.

I served on Highlands Council from 2002-2008. Council representative for Parks and Council Representative on the Juan De Fuca Water Commission/Board

Why are you running? What’s your motivation?

Highlands needs to expand its tax base and I want to make sure that happens and not with a mine! My motivation was the direction council seems to be moving towards based on a survey created during a pandemic which garnered minimal resident responses.

What are your top three issues?

Sensible, environmentally friendly, development of South Highlands to expand the tax base with further community consultation as we move thru development processes.

Wildfire management and community evacuation plan.

Residential food production.

What’s your vision for your community in 25 years?

A Highlands that retains the values that make it such a treasured community today. The same rural nature and extensive park system that we enjoy today. There would be affordable housing options for seniors and young adults. A tax base that allows for all residents to live and play in the Highlands.

What’s one “big idea” you have for your community?

To oversee the development of South Highlands in a way that represents our community values and ensures adequate public consultations.
