Brett Smyth - North Saanich council candidate 2022

Brett Smyth

Are you associated with or running as part of a slate? If so, which one?

- No association to a slate

Do you live in the municipality where you are running, and if so, for how long? If not, what is your connection to that community?

- North Saanich resident

What is your occupation, and for how long?

- Produce farmer for 22 years

Tell us about your previous elected and/or community experience.

- Previously acclaimed in the 2018 election as a Councillor

Why are you running? What’s your motivation?

What are your top three issues?

1) There are limited housing opportunities for young people in terms of rentals, particularly close to transportation links. Our ongoing OCP Review speaks to this but there is stonewalling by some residents fearing the dam gates of urban development will follow closely.

2) The fear factor. From climate change to the next Covid variant, our capability to sustain ourselves through such events is put to the test and, succeed we will, but still the negativity draws the oxygen from the room. It would help better if politicians would accentuate the positive.

3) Mental health care opportunities expanded to help those who are struggling to help themselves.

What’s your vision for your community in 25 years?

- My vision for my community in 25 years is to see a more diverse population in terms of ages and its mosaic. A reasonable growth strategy and a specific placement for development will still keep the district in its rural state. I could also see a more vibrant and economically-sound farming component, thanks to real support from within and without the district.

What’s one “big idea” you have for your community?

- Years ago the local community hall in Deep Cove burned down and was never replaced. We are really lacking such an important community amenity. Such things cost money but potential projects like this can have a way of bringing out the best in people. I would be at the front of the construction line!
