April 11: Election work restores faith in democracy

My faith in democracy was renewed last Sunday while helping the party of my choice canvass for the Nanaimo-Ladysmith byelection that will be held on May 6. A lot is being said these days about 鈥渇ailing democracy.

April 11: Give voters an exam on political awareness

We lament the fact that so many registered voters just don鈥檛 bother to vote, despite how easy we have made it for them. Maybe a low voter turnout isn鈥檛 such a bad thing.

April 10: Standing on guard against what?

There was a lovely photo on the front page of Sunday鈥檚 Times 91原创, depicting a member of HMCS Regina鈥檚 crew 鈥減oised for action,鈥 under the headline: 鈥淥n guard for thee.

April 10: Parties and media creating a scandal

Re: 鈥淭rudeau鈥檚 mistakes are making him a growing liability,鈥 column, April聽7. To compare the SNC-Lavalin affair to Watergate is simply ridiculous.

April 10: Trudeau critique filled with recycled claims

Re: 鈥淭rudeau鈥檚 mistakes are making him a growing liability,鈥 column, April聽7. While I agree with the headline, I find Lawrie McFarlane鈥檚 column filled with recycled claims that I hear from the CBC鈥檚 political pundits.

April 10: Make better emissions comparisons

Re: 鈥淐ould pain at pump be good for climate?鈥 column, April 6. Unfortunately, Jack Knox has accepted the too-common linkage of greenhouse-gas pollution and population in the climate blame game.

April 10: Brexit optimism triumphed over fact

Re: 鈥淲hy Brexit makes a lot of sense,鈥 comment, April 7. The author makes many valid comments on this matter, but fails to mention the other side of the conundrum facing the Brits over exiting the European Union.

April 10: We have shortage of competition, not gas

Re: 鈥淏.C. will consider relief on gas prices,鈥 April 5. Shortage, shmortage! There鈥檚 no shortage of gasoline. I see no service stations with 鈥淪orry, No Gas鈥 signs on their pumps.

April 10: NDP punishing many for faults of a few

Re: 鈥淏.C. to create registry of property ownership,鈥 April 3. I first noticed it in grammar school. A clueless administrator would create a rule that would punish or limit the freedom of all students because of the transgression of a few.

April 10: Challenge the tax鈥檚 SIN requirement

Re: 鈥淣DP is channelling spirit of big brother,鈥 letter, April 6. I could not agree more with this opinion. The 鈥淪IN鈥 of B.C. Finance Minister Carole James鈥檚 speculation-tax requirements should definitely be challenged in the courts.
