Re: “Environmentalists right to be concerned,” letter, March 27.
The letter-writer doesn’t consider having American foundations counter 91ԭ oil production to be a problem. A quick review of aspects of the global oil industry might be useful.
Almost all 91ԭs, including the writer, pay for and use oil energy in one form or another and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Since lifting former president Barack Obama’s bans on the development of wilderness and offshore oilfields and pipelines and with the use of fracking in older fields, the United States recently became the world’s largest oil exporter. The U.S. and Arab oil states are pumping and piping oil faster than ever, pausing only occasionally to manipulate world prices.
Canada currently accounts for 0.5 per cent of the world’s production, and in Victoria we pay top dollar for U.S.-produced and refined gasoline, while our own oil is forced to remain in the ground due to the machinations of the all-powerful U.S. oil lobby. American environmental foundations can find infinitely greater challenges to counter in their own backyard before meddling in Canada’s tiny oil production.
