Re: “International oil-spill drills a dry run for the unthinkable,”
May 26.
An article in the Islander section about the oil-spill response drills created some questions.
I hope it is made clear when a spill happens, all the costs and associated costs will not be on our shoulders. Millions can be spent cleaning up a spill. When asked about a spill, a representative of Western Canada Marine Response Corp. said at a Sooke council meeting they deem an eight to 12 per cent recovery rate (the paper said 15 per cent) the best that can be done. Not good enough for me or the environment.
Because the recovery of spilled oil is so dismal, we will need plenty of money for cleanup and for all those whose livelihood is lost due to oil contamination. Better to build a refinery on Canada’s west coast and sell us the product. Then that oil does not need to go offshore. David Black has offered plans to build such a refinery.
Keep jobs in Canada and sell the oil products. Now, 91ԭ Island is using mostly 91ԭ oil that has been refined in the United States. Please think more about our waters. A catastrophe will happen one day.
