May 26: City needs curbside garden pickup

Victoria is a city of gardens. There are about 20 cars on my block alone.

Victoria is a city of gardens. There are about 20 cars on my block alone. Restricted to Saturday mornings only (unlike Oak Bay and Esquimalt, which have extended hours and days), each car can potentially make one or two trips to the city works yard near the Point Ellice Bridge.

Undoubtedly, many hundreds of cars arrive at the yard on a Saturday morning. Would it not be more environmentally friendly to pay for the infrastructure to have the waste collected?

This would involve a large garbage can per household and a few trucks to collect the waste. Cars, particularly sedans, are not efficient modes of transportation to carry large amounts of garden waste. The garden waste could be collected weekly in the summer months, less frequently in the autumn and infrequently in the winter.

Access to the city works yard is congested and cars idle as they inch forward awaiting their turn. Environmentally, it seems imperative to have organized curbside collections rather than individual cars driving to the yard.
