May 25: Is it time for Vic West to secede?

I live in Vic West. To the surprise of many, we residents do belong to the municipality of Victoria. But listening to the CBC about the lane closure on the Bay Street/Point Ellice bridge, I came to the conclusion that it might be time to secede from Victoria and join Esquimalt.

The Johnson Street/Blue Bridge took a long time to complete and city hall called for patience. On Wednesday, the mayor of Victoria asked again for patience, and said it might be just the opportunity we have been waiting for to walk or even get out the bicycle.

I have cycled all over Great Britain and Europe. I value the bicycle as a mode of transport and recreation, but I am now over 80. I walk as far as I can and I do take the bus. I still drive when necessary.

However, after years of disruption and before taking the drastic step to cut off another bridge, where were the focus groups to discuss the impact all this would have on the Vic West community? I agree the bridge repair is necessary, but who thought this situation not worthy of local input? Where are the shuttle buses to “park and ride? Where are the free little ferries?

Yes, that all costs money, but so did the bicycle lanes and so will our lost tax revenue.
