Certainly, getting the people of Victoria out of their cars and into public transit is commendable. However, free transit is an extreme measure and financially impractical.
Victoria city council needs to reconsider this Utopian dream of free bus travel. Councillors need a plan that is less extreme and more financially sound.
Why not start by cutting the existing fares in half? This could be followed by a promotional 鈥淩ide the Bus鈥 campaign that offers one 鈥淩ide Free鈥 week or a 鈥淩ide-Free Day鈥 once a month.
Such options are workable and sustainable. Free bus travel is neither workable nor sustainable.
