Re: “Despite recycling, trash goes deep,” column, May 16.
Thanks to Jack Knox for reminding us of the cost of our “convenience” packaging, which will not be at all convenient for the rest of the planet or future generations.
What deserves mention here is the better alternatives to landfill or recycling, which are reducing and reusing. Victoria has several stores that allow one to refill all manner of containers with all manner of products. Google ‘Refill Stores Victoria’ for a sampling — and I would include the little shop on Haultain called the Local, as well, which doesn’t appear there.
By using the services of these stores, our household has been using the same pump shampoo bottle for 15 years — one among many other packaging savings. Some supermarkets will also let you bring in your own bags and containers to use at the fish/meat counter, deli or bulk foods; just ask. If they won’t, shop somewhere that will.
We are long past crisis point with our consumption and waste. It is time to go beyond landfill and recycling.
