Re: “Horse ‘emissions’ environmentally friendly,” letter, May 15.
One could easily argue that the issue at hand is animal welfare, not whether horses use fossil fuels or if bicycles should be banned, as well. If humane treatment of animals is a “politically correct ideology” that Coun. Ben Isitt is guilty of supporting, then many Victorians must be guilty of being politically correct.
Horse safety in Victoria is not a new issue. In 2012, a runaway horse carriage threw two people into the street. A horse was injured in August 2018 in a collision with a tour bus. This was the second reported collision that month.
Online reports of one 2018 incident state witnesses saw a horse land on top of a car. While horses might not use fossil fuels, as one letter pointed out, they are subjected to inhaling the emissions from those fossil fuels for hours.
The city of Montreal recently instituted a horse-carriage ban as a result of similar incidents. A ban is being proposed in other large cities across North America. Victoria should look to cities such as Montreal, and their compassionate legislation, for guidance.
