May 11: Student climate ‘strike’ a selfish move

Re: “Students march for climate action,” May 4.

Students who take time off from school to protest inaction on fighting climate change, calling it a “strike,” have only shown their ignorance.

When a union calls a strike against its members’ employer, the members sacrifice their paycheques. If the students were genuine, they would sacrifice their free time by holding the protest on weekends or after school.

The number of hours in a school year actually teaching fundamentals already seems to be decreasing; those teachers who encourage their students to “go on strike” are doing harm to the students as well as to our society at large.

Instead of marching, students can be given projects on analyzing articles written for and against climate change, useful for detecting “fake news” (English class), calculating the amount of CO2 generated by different vehicles commuting from the West Shore (science class), etc.
