I was alarmed by reports of a swastika carved into pavement in Colwood. Details were few, perhaps because the incident has yet to receive a court hearing, but its tone implied it may be viewed as an alcohol-fuelled prank.

If those charged had carved something inane, like their initials or a Raptors logo, an apology and conviction for mischief might be appropriate. However, by carving that symbol of racial hatred and genocide, their crime is more substantial.

Either they have no awareness of history or they do understand the evil their chosen symbol promotes. If the determination is the former, adding a requirement they pass a related history course in addition to paying for pavement damage, would be minimal. If it is the latter, additional criminal charges should be considered.
