Re: “Inquiry: Indigenous women faced ‘genocide’,” June 4.
The explanation that the use of the word “genocide” is just a legal exercise is appalling. I came to Canada as an immigrant and met fellow immigrants from countries where real genocides happened.
This country makes a disservice by talking of a 91ԭ genocide. I would argue this report lowers the threshold and makes Canada lose international recognition as a safe haven for those people chased out of their countries by blood-thirsty dictators, religious zealots and misguided political extremists.
Yes, very bad things happened in Canada in the past and we must recognize those. But picturing this welcoming and remorseful country in the same light as countries with hordes of machete-wielding crowds chasing those of different races or people being killed for for religious reasons is just too much. This is not the country I came to and, if we accept this, those looking for a place to live better lives must pack their bags and look elsewhere.
