June 5: Advice for Hammond, don’t do it

During last year’s Victoria mayoral election, I heard Mike Geoghegan boast about his complaints against fellow candidate Stephen Hammond.

We find out his complaints were dropped by the Law Society of B.C. and Victoria Police because Geoghegan had no proof to substantiate them. But my guess is there are Victorians who took Geoghegan’s word, as if something was actually going on.

We also now know that an anonymous Elections B.C. complaint is still open with no evidence backing it.

It’s one thing for a candidate to throw mud, but it’s a whole different story when a government agency can get away with this.

The newspaper article says Elections B.C. will throw out the case if Hammond signs a declaration saying he had not paid or sponsored anyone to make Facebook posts. Mr. Hammond, don’t do it.

This is a country where a person is innocent until proven guilty. No wonder we can’t get decent people to run for office.
