Re: “Three 12-storey towers pitched for downtown Langford,” May 29.
I find Langford Coun. Denise Blackwell’s comments dismissive to the residents speaking to core neighbourhood and safety issues arising from developer-proposed zoning changes.
Quoting from the Times 91ԭ article:
“About a dozen residents, most of whom came from an adjacent four-storey apartment, raised concerns. “They were concerned about traffic and stuff,” Blackwell said. “But I think once it’s built, people will go: ‘Oh, that isn’t that bad.’ ”
Residents from Fairway Avenue and neighbouring buildings on Goldstream Avenue attended a zoning committee meeting (scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on a weekday when most working people are unable to attend).
Many spoke out against the 641 Goldstream Ave. six-storey proposal as being out of scale with the current neighbourhood. They also addressed the committee with concerns about increased density creating traffic problems and parking issues, with related safety issues. A petition was submitted to the committee containing signatures against the proposal, from residents unable to attend.
It was indicated, during the course of statements from the audience, that the committee was only just receiving information from city staff and this meeting was just an initial step in the approval process.
Yet the Denise Blackwell quote from the Times 91ԭ article suggests that that Langford has already decided to approve this proposal without regard to amending the proposal for 641 Goldstream or appropriately responding to issues raised by concerned Langford citizens.
