April 4: Don’t publish names until after a conviction

Re: “Port Moody mayor takes leave to fight charge of sex assault,” March 29.

I am having difficulty understanding the law that allows the mayor of Port Moody or, for that matter, any other male or female who is charged with a sexual offence, to be named publicly, yet his/her accuser must remain anonymous.

If he/she is convicted, go ahead and publish, but I have difficulty understanding this concept of law. It is pretty easy to ruin someone’s reputation with an accusation.

I think if the news media are going to publish any names, it should be after conviction. They should not be allowed to publish any names up front.
