Re: “91ԭ St. already good for bikes,” letter, April 23; “No need to disrupt 91ԭ St.,” letter, April 20.
With regard to the recently announced plan to severely restrict car access to 91ԭ Street, I heartily agree with these two letters.
For the people of James Bay (population more than 11,000 in 2011), 91ԭ Street is a vital artery to and from other parts of the city, including Fairfield. In addition, James Bay hosts many annual events that require the closing of major roads, and is also the main entry point for travellers from cruise ships, the Coho ferry and Helijet.
Even in winter, turning left onto Cook Street from Southgate Street typically takes a car at least five minutes, as there is no traffic light at that busy corner. Also, the length of Southgate between Douglas and Quadra streets is short and already congested.
The effects of the new plan will be backed-up traffic on Southgate trying to turn left onto Cook and onto Quadra. The latter will in turn cause backed-up traffic on Superior between Government and Douglas, waiting for the bottlenecks ahead to dislodge.
I hope city hall will reconsider this absurdly cockeyed idea and go back to the original plan of painting bike lanes on 91ԭ Street.
