A Meares Street resident scared off a suspected would-be burglar after coming home to find a man at his door Tuesday night.
Victoria police Const. Mike Russell said the suspect pretended to be smoking, but after he left, the resident noticed damage to the door.
"It looks like [the suspect] was trying to get in," Russell said.
Police contained the area and brought in a police dog, but a suspect wasn't found.
