Skateboarder's legacy fund to help children in need

A legacy fund is being set up to help youth sports in the name of Jamie Collins, who died last Friday in a cliff-jumping accident.

Three weeks before his death, Jamie, a well-known skateboarder who grew up in Port Alberni and had been living in Tofino, was talking with his brother about youth who couldn't afford to take part in sports.

So when the family began to receive donations from the community, they decided to set up the Jamie Collins Legend and Legacy Fund at the Bank of Montreal to follow through on his wishes.

The funds will go toward youth sports organizations in the Alberni Valley and in Tofino.

"There are kids hanging around in the skatepark that don't have a skateboard or aren't participating in sports because the family doesn't have enough money for the equipment and fees," said Jamie's father, Bob.

"Jamie was the kind of person who would be trying to scrounge up a second-hand board for a kid who couldn't afford one."

In 2006, Jamie and his best friend, Brandon Wells, had been spraypainting skateboards for kids in need. They later started their own company, Instrumental Skateboards.

Kim Schroeder, a local artist in Port Alberni, recently designed a skateboard deck for Jamie. It is being raffled off to benefit the fund.

Donations to the fund can be made at the Bank of Montreal. They will also be accepted at Jamie's celebration of life at the Collins Farm at 5955 Hector Rd. on Sunday at 1 p.m.
