Police are still looking to speak to witnesses to a crash in Nanaimo that left a semi-trailer-truck driver seriously injured and closed a major mid-Island roadway for 11 hours Wednesday morning.
Nanaimo RCMP investigators are looking in particular to speak to a woman who provided emergency first aid to the driver of a Toyota Venza and left the scene before her contact information could be obtained, police said.
The early-morning crash on Highway 19 saw the semi-trailer-truck driver pinned in the truck cab for several hours, suffering neck injuries, a shattered pelvis and a broken leg.
A man driving a Toyota Venza crossover SUV crossed the median on a route intended for emergencies and drove south in the northbound lanes, striking the truck, whose driver swerved at highway speed to avoid the SUV, hitting a concrete barrier and rockface.
The semi-truck driver was flown to a Victoria hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Venza was taken to hospital in Nanaimo with a leg injury.
As of Friday, both men were still in the hospital, police said.
The SUV driver is under investigation for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle under the Criminal Code.
Anyone with relevant dash-cam video or who has yet to speak to police about the crash can contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
