TORONTO 聴 All passengers and a driver on a Toronto Transit Commission bus in west Toronto escaped without injury after live power lines crashed onto the vehicle Monday.A crane came tumbling down around 1:45 p.m. at a construction site near Kipling Avenue and Rexdale Boulevard, triggering a domino effect that police say toppled six or seven hydro poles. One of the poles fell just behind the bus, and live wires ended up strung over the roof of the vehicle.TTC spokeswoman Milly Bernal says all 28 people on the bus got off safely within two hours after power in the area was cut.The operator of the collapsed crane was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said Toronto police Supt. Ron Taverner.聯It certainly could have been a lot worse,聰 he said.聯The crane came down on a very busy arterial road... There could have been cars or people or any number of things that could have happened but didn聮t happened, thank goodness.聰He called the bus driver a 聯hero聰 for making sure all of the passengers stayed on the bus while the live power lines were strewn across the vehicle.Toronto Hydro shut off power to the area and then made sure the lines were completely 聯de-energized,聰 spokeswoman Tanya Bruckmueller said. She said that roughly 400 customers in the area were affected by the shut off.Taverner said the road could be closed for days as crews clear away the downed power lines and the fallen crane.
