The return to school after the holidays will be unaffected for students at a Duncan elementary school where a fire on New Year’s Eve damaged a back pod.

The fire occurred around 10 p.m. at Alexander Elementary School, the Cowichan Valley School District said in a news release.

The fire department prevented the fire from spreading further into the school and the main building was not affected.

Cause of the fire is not known and police continue to investigate, the district said.

“We are incredibly grateful for the quick work of the North Cowichan Fire Department and the significant resources they deployed to ensure the damage to Alexander Elementary School was minimized. We will continue to work with the fire department and the RCMP as they investigate the cause of the fire,” said Cathy Schmidt, chair of the district’s Board of Education.
