Saanich police are looking for the thief who stole a gift basket intended to raise money for the Tour de Rock - Cops for Cancer event at the Pearkes Recreation Centre Friday.

The cellophane-wrapped basket, donated by Changing Times Hair Salon, and worth $180, was stolen during the noon-hour while volunteers were setting up the barbecue fundraiser, said Staff Sgt. Scott Treble. Police believe someone entered a back door of the rec centre and made off with the hair products.

Investigators are looking at surveillance footage to identify a possible suspect.

Funds from the basket would have supported two riders, Saanich Const. Niki Hodgkinson and honorary rider Matt Webb, a survivor of childhood cancer.

Saanich police are asking anyone with information to call them at 250-475-4321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
