HUDEC, Theodore Peter
January 9th, 1925, Shanghai, China -August 7th, 2012, Victoria, BC
It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Theodore Hudec after a short but valiant battle with brain cancer. Theo is survived by his wife Hella, his daughter Sylvia Moser, his son Alvin Hudec (Anne), grandchildren Stephan, Christina, and Richard Moser, his sister Alessa de Wet of Arizona, and many nieces and nephews. Theo was predeceased by his older brother Martin Hudec by exactly four months to the day of his own passing. Anyone who was acquainted with Theo knew his cheerful demeanour, his passion for life and his adventurous spirit. Born in China to the architect Laszlo Hudec and his wife Gisela, Theo was schooled at KWS in Shanghai, China, SMUS in Victoria and UBC in 91原创. He went on to live in Chile, Brazil, USA, Austria and finally Victoria. Everyone knew him as a "Robinson Crusoe" of a man: being able to do anything or fix anything he set his mind to. He was a talented and successful entrepreneur with various business interests as diverse as owning a ski chalet in the Andes in Chile, an iron foundry in Brazil and a juice bar in California, to various real estate and stock market ventures in Canada and the USA. Theo was also an avid hiker and sailor in his younger years; in his later years he was a passionate glider pilot. Theo's love of travel spanned his life as well as the globe, with a particular love for steam ship -followed by cruise ship -travel. Although he spoke German, English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, he had the uncanny ability to make himself understood in many other languages, including Japanese and Mandarin. He bestowed his love of travel and adventure upon the entire family, declaring that travel had the ability to "extend a person's life through new experiences." Most important to Theo was his love of family, his wife of 58 years Hella, and his children, Sylvia and Alvin. He was dedicated and interested in his children's lives, being a dad as well as mentor, friend, and business partner to them. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren, with whom he spent many hours, taking great delight and pride in them. He lived by the motto: "first comes family, then second comes family, and finally comes family." Theo was well known for his immense generosity, modesty, and sense of humour as well as for the twinkle in his eye and the wrinkling of his nose when he laughed. Theo was truly the central pillar of the family: husband, father, brother, Opa, uncle, friend, and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him -there is no "Ersatz" for him. Theo passed away from this world, in his own home surrounded by his family, just as he had wished. He lived life fearlessly, and as in life, he passed from it with vivacity, lighting up the skies with an amazing thunderstorm and a ray of sunlight across his pastures with which to say goodbye. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Michael Miles, the Victoria Hospice Society and the Palliative Response Team for their compassion and help, and for facilitating Theo's final wishes.
There will be no funeral services as requested by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations to Victoria Hospice would be appreciated.
