Herring fans will be able to load up on the tiny fish for food or bait on Saturday, when a popular charity sale returns to James Bay.

The sale at Finest At Sea at 27 Erie St. near Fisherman’s Wharf starts at 7 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. or until the fish are sold out.

A 20-pound bag of fresh food-grade herring will sell for $20 and 10 pounds will be priced at $15.

All revenue from the sale goes to support young patients being treated for cancer at B.C. Children’s Hospital.

B.C. fishers and others in the marine sector volunteer their time and equipment to fish for herring in special catches authorized by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The catch is split between Victoria and Steveston near Richmond, which hosts a similar event.

Organizers urge herring lovers to monitor Finest at Sea on Facebook to learn of any changes in fishing conditions that could affect the sale.
