Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau made a Victoria-specific campaign pledge to increase help to first-time homebuyers on Thursday, the second day of the federal election campaign.

For the most part, Saturday鈥檚 municipal elections were good news for incumbent mayors in cities around B.C. Incumbents were re-elected in Kelowna, Prince George, Williams Lake and Kamloops.

Incumbent Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps hung onto her job Saturday as the opposition vote split between challengers Stephen Hammond, Michael Geoghagen and Bruce McGuigan. Helps had 42.6 per cent of the vote versus Hammond鈥檚 29.

It was a night of upsets in Capital Regional District civic elections Saturday as four mayors went down to defeat in Sidney, Oak Bay, Saanich and Colwood. But, at the end of the evening, Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps was still standing.

Former teacher and one-term Saanich councillor Fred Haynes has scooped the mayor鈥檚 office from Richard Atwell. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be the most amazing council and I鈥檓 looking so forward to being a part of it,鈥� Haynes said Saturday evening.
