Ice and freezing rain caused school closures and power outages in the Fraser Valley, complicating Monday morning for thousands of residents in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Langley and Mission.

All of Chilliwack鈥檚 public schools were closed Monday as Environment Canada was expecting about 4 cm of snow mixed with freezing rain to fall before switching to plain rain later in the morning.

As of 7 a.m., more than four thousand customers in Abbotsford and Mission were still cut off from power according to BC Hydro. Hydro estimated that power would be restored by noon.

Meanwhile, the 91原创 Avalanche Centre issued a warning for the North Shore mountains. The alert warned people to stay away from the mountains at and below the tree line, where very dangerous avalanche conditions have been brought on by heavy snowfall and wind.
